Parish Ranger / Caretaker

The position of Parish Ranger is currently vacant and the Council are looking to find someone to take on this role.

The Parish Ranger is sometimes known as a Parish Caretaker. Their duties include, amongst other things: hedge trimming, footpath clearance, verge tidying, litter picking and other things as they arise or you request. In addition to this the person also helps the Council in it’s environmental and biodiversity work.

The post is self-employed and must have a knowledge of the locality and own their own tools, equipment and transport to do the job, though we will provide some specialist equipment where needed.

Accountable To: Alwoodley Parish Council

Location: Alwoodley Parish

Job Type: Part-Time; approximately 10 hours per week at £17.00 per hour.

Job Purpose: To maintain and enhance the parish environment by performing a variety of tasks that ensure the cleanliness, safety, and biodiversity of the area. This role combines the traditional duties of a lengthsman with the responsibilities of a parish ranger, focusing on infrastructure maintenance, environmental conservation, and community engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Environmental Maintenance:
    • Regularly patrol the parish to identify and address issues such as litter, graffiti, and fly-tipping.
    • Maintain public footpaths and bridleways, ensuring they are clear and safe for use.
    • Perform minor repairs to street furniture, signage, Village Green Little Library, and other public amenities.
  2. Groundskeeping:
    • Cutting back overhanging branches, hedges, and managing vegetation (e.g. nettles, brambles) in public areas.
    • Plant and maintain flower beds, and other greenery to enhance the parish’s aesthetic appeal.
    • Remove invasive species and manage habitats to support local wildlife.
  3. Biodiversity Conservation:

    • Serve as a point of contact for residents regarding environmental and maintenance issues.
    • Assist in organizing and supporting community events such as clean-up days and environmental awareness campaigns.
    • Liaise with local authorities, police, and other organisations to address issues such as anti-social behaviour and vandalism.
  5. Health and Safety:
    • Conduct regular health and safety checks on parish-owned properties and facilities.
    • Ensure all activities are carried out in compliance with health and safety regulations.
    • Attend relevant training sessions to stay updated on best practices and legal requirements.
  6. Administrative Duties:
    • Maintain accurate records of work completed, including before and after photographs.
    • Report any significant issues or required repairs to the Alwoodley Parish Council.
    • Prepare reports for parish council meetings as requested.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Experience in grounds maintenance, environmental conservation, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of biodiversity conservation practices and relevant legislation.
  • Basic DIY skills and the ability to perform minor repairs including PAT testing.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Full clean driving license.

Additional Information:

  • The role may require flexible working hours, including some evenings and weekends.
  • The post holder will need to provide the necessary tools and equipment to perform their duties.
